What is collected
When you visit a page, Umami records:
- The URL you visited
- The referring URL (where you came from)
- Your browser name and version
- Your operating system
- Your device type (desktop, mobile, tablet)
- Your country, derived from your IP address at request time
What is not collected
- Your IP address is never stored
- No cookies are set
- No cross-site tracking
- No fingerprinting
- No personal information of any kind
Why?
I want to know which posts people find useful and roughly where readers come from. That’s it. The data stays with me and is not shared with or sold to anyone.
If you prefer not to be counted, a standard ad or script blocker will prevent the analytics script from running (I’m pretty sure don’t fact check me on that).
Why not collect more data?
“The naked man fears no pickpocket”
This is probably my very favorite quote of all time in the realm of security. It amazes me every day just how many platforms collect WAY more data than they need to. Some random app or website I visited for 25 minutes in 9th grade getting hacked shouldn’t end up being a massive privacy scandal. As such, I see no need to collect any data like that. I have no good use for anything past basic analytics, and just genuinely want to see what people are reading and where people are coming from.
